Why Does It Reduce Breast Cancer Recurrence

This effect was seen for all types of breast cancer and was independent of whether they took the drug tamoxifen to prevent recurrence. This is certainly good news for soy lovers!

Eating Soy Products: Why Does It Reduce Breast Cancer Recurrence

Why would eating soy products reduce the risk of a breast cancer recurrence? Soy is a good source of isoflavones which act as phytoestrogens in the body. This means they bind to estrogen receptors and stimulate the receptor less than does the natural estrogen produced by the body. By doing this, it blocks binding of natural estrogen which has a more powerful effect on the breast receptors. This causes a reduction in breast cell stimulation which can translate into a reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence since most breast tumors are stimulated by strong estrogen activity. Eating soy products also has other anti-cancer benefits because of its antioxidant effects and its effects on other enzymes.

Should You Eat Soy Products if You’ve Had Breast Cancer?

This rather large study should do much to reassure women who’ve had breast cancer that eating soy products is safe and may be beneficial; but always consult your doctor first if you’re had breast cancer.

Most women who have been treated for breast cancer want to do everything they can to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence. There’s little doubt that diet plays a role in surviving breast cancer and reducing the risk of experiencing a recurrence. According to studies and information published by the American Cancer Society eating a low fat diet can lower the risk of breast cancer recurrence - as can eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.  Home

But, what about eating soy products? This has been an area of controversy for several years now with some studies showing that soy products help to protect breast and others showing they may actually increase the risk of breast cancer. Now, a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that eating soy products can reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence and increase the odds of surviving breast cancer.

Eating Soy Products and Breast Cancer Recurrence: The Study

This study looked at 5042 Chinese breast cancer survivors between the ages of twenty and seventy-five. During an average period of almost four years, their soy consumption was monitored along with their breast cancer progression. By the end of the study, researchers found that women who ate the most soy products had the lowest risk of breast cancer recurrence and the lower risk of death from breast cancer.
